Tenrei Ota (1900-1985)

Tenrei Ota was a Japanese family planning pioneer who developed a contraceptive coil known as the ‘Ota Ring’. He campaigned in the 1930s to change public opinion, by writing pamphlets and articles and giving talks. In 1937 he was arrested and forced to discontinue his efforts around birth control; only after the Second World War was he able to resume his research.
