Simone Veil (born 1927)

Simone Veil, lawyer, French politician and former president of the European Parliament. In her role as French Minister for Health from 1974 to 1979 she ensured, for example, easier access to contraception – the sale of contraceptive methods such as the pill was illegal in France until 1967. Thanks to her courageous and determined negotiations, she eventually succeeded in 1975 in getting abortion legalized in France, which is why the law even bears her name (loi Veil).
