As Minister for Women’s Affairs and chairperson of the women’s committee (Bundesfrauen) of the Austrian Social Democratic Party (SPÖ), politician Johanna Dohnal was instrumental in bringing about the legalization of abortion by the Austrian Parliament in 1974. Austrians also have her to thank for the fact that abortion in Austria is regulated by term limits, rather than an indications-based approach, which would require women to justify why they wanted an abortion.
