What we can learn from the garden hose

In the 1930s, “riding a motorbike on bumpy, potholed streets” was used in desperation as a way to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. A number of similar ideas seem strange or even dangerous today, but when abortion was illegal, they had the benefit of concealing the true motive:
